Disconnected Reflection

Computers as an addiction? I never took the time to realize how much we truly use our computers, and how much we use them for.  Our society depends so greatly on technology that it is difficult for the three students to go without the use of computers. The idea that a student’s grade can be affected, that some things cannot be subbed out, and that teachers would not always be supportive of this experiment blew my mind.

Technology has come a long way in time, but we depend on it completely.  The three students had to work harder on their homework than other students due to the fact of not using computers. I think that it is awesome how much better of work the students seemed to be doing, but they put so much more work into their assignments, but could possibly still get a lower grade than someone who easily and mindlessly finished the assignment using a computer.

The time card situation really surprised me. I understand that they had just switched over, but the offices inability to work around their needs without using a computer was baffling. I understand that it is how they do things, but they could have simply printed off a few time sheets for them to fill out and have a worker easily enter the hours into the system at a later hour. It made me think of how I would assess the situation if I were to not use a computer. So many assignments are communicated through the internet, and I would be behind in school and would do poorly.

The three students oftentimes got very odd looks from people when they stated that they were to not use a computer. I was surprised when even older people were giving them odd looks when they stated that they were not going to be using computers. Older people often comment on how horrible it is that we depend so much on computers! But they are just as dependent on us for being able to use them.
Altogether, this film gave me a different point of view on technology that we are using and I think it would be very interesting to try the experiment. I do not picture the teachers being as patient due to the fact that UW-Stevens Point is not a private school as the three students was, however, if I was ever challenged to not use my computer, I think that it would be an eye opening experience.
